Jamu is a traditional Indonesian medicine made
from roots, leaves, fruits, flowers or barks of
indigenous plants.
It is particularly popular among the Javanese
although it recently gained popularity in Asia,
Europe and the Middle East. It is used not only
to cure illness, but also as health care, beauty
care and beverages.
It is believed that the tradition of Jamu started
on the seventeenth century Mataram empire and
the secret to preparation was passed on from generations
by word of mouth. Jamu can be consumed as drink
or applied externally as "lulur".
Jamu preparation has undergone significant improvement
through pharmaceutical grade processing. The consumption
of Jamu has now becoming more popular worldwide.
